Tino Sehgal, kWh, 2002-2009, June 05, 2010, June 12, 2010, June 19, 2010, June 26, 2010, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., NUMBER THREE: HERE AND NOW, JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION, Duesseldorf
Tino Sehgal creates intense experiences of art without ever producing tangible things. Using actors to address visitors to his exhibitions, Sehgal makes each of us engage directly and in our own way with the situations we are confronted with. His art happens in the head of the spectators; all that remains is the memory of something that cannot be reconstructed or captured in any medium.
Sehgal premiered his new work “kWh, 2002–2009” at the JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION. At regular intervals, a sudden power failure causes all ten video monitors in the exhibition space to go blank and plunges the room into darkness. After a moment’s silence, the work, only audible at first, begins. Three voices sing a slow melody, taking it in turns to chart the energy being saved by the temporary outage, a figure that doubles each time. In doing so, the singers create an increasingly dense concentration of people, space, sound and time.
